3-Day Merzouga Desert Adventure
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Middle Atlas – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Begin your journey from Fez, driving southward through the breathtaking Middle Atlas region. Your first stop is Ifrane, a clean and peaceful town often nicknamed Morocco’s Switzerland for its alpine architecture and European ambiance.
Continue through the cedar woodlands near Azrou, where you’ll have a chance to see Barbary macaques roaming freely in their natural forest setting.
Your route continues over the mountains and into the Ziz Valley, where dramatic cliffs and endless palm groves mark the entrance to the desert.
Make a short visit to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops and desert atmosphere, before reaching Merzouga. Here, you’ll settle into a comfortable guesthouse or hostel near the dunes, where a delicious dinner and peaceful night await at the edge of the Sahara.
Day 2: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Nomads – Desert Camp
After breakfast, set off for a 4×4 tour of the Erg Chebbi dunes, exploring the various landscapes that surround Merzouga. Visit Khamlia village, where locals of sub-Saharan origin will welcome you with their hypnotic Gnawa music—a powerful spiritual tradition.
Later, stop to meet nomadic families living in the desert.
You’ll learn about their way of life, their homes made of wool, and the ancient rhythms of survival in the arid lands.
In the late afternoon, embark on a camel trek into the golden dunes. Arrive at your desert camp just before sunset, where you’ll enjoy mint tea and a warm welcome.
Spend the evening under the star-lit sky, savoring a traditional Berber dinner by the fire with local music and storytelling.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz Valley – Ifrane – Fez
Wake up early for a sunrise over the dunes, then return to Merzouga by camel. After breakfast, begin the return journey to Fez.
Your first stop is Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalt region, where old markets and mudbrick buildings reflect Morocco’s imperial past.
Pass again through Erfoud, then follow the road through the lush Ziz Valley, a stunning green belt in the middle of the desert. Cross the Tizi-n-Talghomt pass, and pause in Ifrane once more for a break before completing your journey back to Fez in the late afternoon.
