4-Day Sahara Expedition from Fez to Marrakech

Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga

Begin your desert adventure by departing from Fez, heading south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, a charming mountain town known for its alpine houses and clean, green streets — often called the Switzerland of Morocco.

Next, continue to the cedar forest of Azrou, where you’ll have the opportunity to see Barbary macaques among ancient trees. The drive continues through Midelt and over dramatic mountain passes toward Errachidia.

Travel along the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of palm groves winding through rocky landscapes, and pause to admire panoramic views. In Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, you’ll get a glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past.

Arrive at the edge of the dunes in Merzouga, where you’ll settle into a traditional guesthouse and enjoy your first night near the desert with a hearty Moroccan dinner.

Day 2: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Khamlia – Nomads – Desert Camp

After breakfast, begin your exploration of the Erg Chebbi dunes, a magical sea of sand stretching as far as the eye can see. Visit the village of Khamlia, where descendants of sub-Saharan Africans will welcome you with a performance of Gnawa music, full of rhythm and soul.

Continue by 4×4 to visit the M’ifis mines, a site once used for kohl and salt extraction, and stop by nomadic families who live in the desert year-round.

Sip tea in their traditional tents and learn about their customs and way of life.

In the late afternoon, ride camels across the golden dunes to a Berber desert camp. As the sun dips below the horizon, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner by candlelight under the star-filled sky before sleeping in a traditional nomadic tent.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate

Wake early to climb a dune and witness the sunrise over the Sahara—a truly unforgettable moment. After breakfast and a refreshing shower back at the lodge, begin the journey westward.

Stop in Rissani, a historic trading town and former capital of the Tafilalt region. Then head to the dramatic Todra Gorges, where towering canyon walls rise above a narrow riverbed.

Continue your scenic drive through the Dades Valley, famous for its natural rock formations and kasbah-dotted hillsides. Visit the Skoura oasis, a peaceful place filled with date palms and ancient fortified homes.

End the day in Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” where you’ll spend the night in a comfortable hotel.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After breakfast, explore the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified mudbrick village that has served as the backdrop for many famous films and series, including Game of Thrones and Gladiator.

From there, drive through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which offers incredible views of Berber villages nestled into the hills.

Arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon, where your tour concludes with a transfer to your accommodation or the airport.
